Starting out as a per diem nurse in long-term care can feel exciting – and a little overwhelming. You're stepping into new environments, meeting new teams, and adjusting to different routines. At Care NW Staffing, we know that flexibility is your strength – and we’re here to help you thrive from day one.

Here are a few quick tips to help you feel confident and prepared:

1. Arrive early (even just 10–15 minutes)

Giving yourself time to check in, find your assignment, and get oriented can make the entire shift go more smoothly. Every facility has its own layout and workflow – a few extra minutes can help you settle in calmly.

2. Introduce yourself with confidence

You may be new to the team, but your role is essential. A simple, friendly introduction to the charge nurse or floor staff helps set the tone for collaboration and shows you're ready to pitch in.

3. Ask questions – and take notes

Even experienced nurses need reminders when stepping into a new building. Don’t hesitate to clarify policies, charting expectations, or med pass routines. Keeping a small notebook or note app can save you time on future shifts.

4. Bring a few essentials

Pens, your badge, a small notebook, and a watch with a second hand can come in handy for vitals and timing tasks – especially in facilities where phone use is limited.

5. Be kind to yourself

Every shift teaches you something new. Some days will feel smooth, others will be challenging – but showing up with compassion for your patients and yourself makes all the difference.

At Care NW Staffing, we’re here to support your success – shift by shift.
